One of the questions I’m asked most often is “how do I book more shows?” or perhaps “how do I find a manager” or “how do I get a label to sign me” and I get it, because this is the goal of so many musicians. To play more shows. To reach a wider audience. To make more money.
Let me be the first to say that these things take time. There’s no magic fix of overnight solution but there is a path to success if getting a manager, signing to a label, or booking more shows is something you want. And why wouldn’t it be?!
After fifteen years in the industry as a music journalist, publicist, marketer, manager, and yes, booking a few shows, here’s what I’ve learned you need.
Talent and Skill
Including the most obvious one first in case you thought you could pass by it! Yes, talent is still number one. Mastery of one’s craft is non-negotiable. Over and over this is what I hear labels and managers say when it comes to decision time on signing an artist.
The takeaway is this: you’ve got to put in your 10,000 hours to be absolutely incredible at your craft. There are no workarounds to this.
Professionalism
Sure we’re in the music industry and yeah it can feel very casual. But that isn’t the same as unprofessional.
Artists who embody reliability, punctuality, and a strong work ethic are not only easier to work with but also inspire trust and confidence among industry professionals. (and trust me, word travels fast)
From honoring commitments to effectively communicating with collaborators, professionalism is a must.
Strong Brand and Identity
Developing a distinct visual style, persona, and overall image not only captures the imagination of fans and attracts the right ones, but also leaves a lasting impression on industry professionals. They want to see that you have a clear brand and that you understand how to attract people to it.
You can do this through social media, album artwork, stage presence, and the collaborations you do.
Engagement and Fanbase
This one you know! Building a loyal fanbase is essential for long-term success and anyone that’s taking a solid risk on signing you is going to want proof that those things exist before they sign you. Engaging with fans through social media, live performances, and interactive experiences fosters a sense of community that will help your fans grow from passive to active fans.
By nurturing a dedicated following and cultivating meaningful relationships with your fans, you not only extend your reach but also lay the groundwork for a sustainable career.
Work Ethic and Drive
Do you want to work with someone who doesn’t care as much as you?
Of course not! And neither do labels. Behind every successful artist lies a relentless work ethic and an unyielding drive to succeed. From late-night studio sessions to relentless promotion and touring, achieving greatness requires unwavering commitment and determination.
This means embracing challenges, seizing opportunities, and continually pushing the boundaries of your craft. These are the hallmarks of an artist who is destined for long-term success in the music industry.
