Happy (almost!) St Patrick’s Day!
It’s not often I get to interview entrepreneurs (in the traditional sense, that is. You know you’re an entrepreneur if you’re an artist!) for Indie Insights. For St Paddy’s though, I wanted to offer something a little special.
Today I’m chatting with Dublin-based instrument company McNeela Music on how they’ve stayed competitive, innovative, and creative over the last four decades, growing from a small shop in Ireland to a worldwide renowned institution. We chat about how they’re preserving Irish tradition through hard work, collaboration, and integrity, and what lessons artists can learn from their inspiring journey through entrepreneurship.
This is a special one, filled with lots of actionable advice and I hope you’ll take the time to absorb it. There’s no better way to learn than case studies of others doing something in this business successfully.
Enjoy!
How has your passion for music influenced your approach to entrepreneurship, and what advice would you give to musicians looking to turn their passion into a business venture?
My journey from a passionate musician to an entrepreneur at McNeela Music has been guided by the belief that music, especially traditional Irish music, holds a unique power to connect, heal, and inspire. This belief fueled my ambition to not only craft instruments but also to create a community around our shared love for this art form. Embracing my passion for music as the cornerstone of my business philosophy has allowed McNeela Music to thrive by focusing on quality, tradition, and innovation, ensuring that each instrument we create carries the soul of Ireland.
For musicians looking to transform their passion into a business, my advice is simple: let your love for music guide your decisions, but remember the importance of adaptability and resilience. The music industry is as challenging as it is rewarding, demanding a balance between artistic integrity and entrepreneurial savvy. Stay true to your roots, innovate with respect to tradition, and always prioritize the connections you make through music. These principles have not only shaped my career but have also ensured that McNeela Music remains a beacon for those who seek to keep the tradition of Irish music alive and vibrant.
Collaboration and community seem to be integral to your company’s ethos. How have partnerships and connections within the music community contributed to your success, and what advice would you give to musicians seeking to build meaningful collaborations in their careers?
At McNeela Music, the ethos of collaboration and community is indeed the heartbeat of our operations. The partnerships and connections we’ve nurtured within the music community have been pivotal to our success. From working closely with local musicians and schools to collaborating with global artists, these relationships have enriched our understanding of the needs and desires of musicians. They’ve also allowed us to innovate and tailor our instruments to better serve the community. This reciprocal relationship between McNeela Music and the wider music community has created a virtuous cycle of feedback, improvement, and mutual support, which has been instrumental in our growth and development.
For musicians seeking to build meaningful collaborations, my advice is to start by looking within your own community. Engage with local musicians, events, and schools. Every collaboration, no matter how small it might seem, can lead to new opportunities and insights. Be open to feedback and willing to share your knowledge and skills with others. Remember, meaningful collaborations are built on mutual respect, shared values, and a genuine interest in each other’s growth. Approach each partnership with the intention to learn and contribute equally, and you’ll find that these connections will not only enrich your career but also enhance your personal growth as an artist.
One thing I love to talk about is scaling. It’s something entrepreneurs are familiar with but some musicians struggle to understand how it relates to them. For you, scaling means maintaining quality of your intruments while growing, which can be such a challenge. How do you ensure the craftsmanship and authenticity of your instruments remain consistent?
Scaling, while maintaining the quality and authenticity of our instruments, is indeed a nuanced challenge that we’ve navigated at McNeela Music. At the heart of our approach is a commitment to the craft itself. This means that as we grow, we invest not just in production, but in the artisans and craftsmen who bring their expertise and passion to every piece they create. We’ve fostered a culture of pride in workmanship, where each instrument is seen not just as a product, but as a legacy of traditional Irish music.
To ensure consistency in craftsmanship and authenticity, we’ve developed rigorous quality control processes. Each instrument is meticulously inspected at various stages of production, ensuring it meets our high standards. We also engage with the music community, gathering feedback directly from musicians to understand how our instruments perform in real-world settings. This feedback loop is crucial for continuous improvement and innovation. Scaling for us isn’t just about reaching more customers; it’s about deepening the value and authenticity we deliver to each musician who chooses a McNeela instrument.

How can artists apply this to their own efforts to maintain artist integrity while growing their fanbase?
Artists looking to maintain their integrity while expanding their fanbase can draw inspiration from the approach we’ve taken at McNeela Music. Just as we focus on the craftsmanship and authenticity of each instrument, artists should prioritize the quality and authenticity of their work. This means staying true to your artistic vision and values, even as you explore new opportunities for growth. Authenticity resonates with audiences, and maintaining this can help deepen the connection with your existing fans while attracting new ones.
In addition, just as we use feedback from our community to refine our instruments, artists should engage with their audience, listening to their responses and incorporating this feedback in a way that feels true to their artistic identity. Utilizing social media platforms and live performances to create a dialogue with fans can provide valuable insights into what resonates with them. Growth should be seen as an opportunity to not just increase numbers but to build a more engaged and dedicated community around your art. Remember, expanding your fanbase is not just about reaching more people; it’s about connecting more deeply with those who are moved by what you create.
As entrepreneurs, you’ve faced competition in the market. This isn’t dissimilar to the competition musicians face. How do you differentiate your brand from competitors, and what strategies can musicians employ to stand out in a crowded industry?
Differentiating McNeela Music in a competitive market has been about honing in on what makes us uniquely valuable to our customers: the authenticity of our instruments, our dedication to the tradition of Irish music, and our commitment to the community of musicians we serve. We’ve focused on storytelling, sharing the heritage of each instrument, and the craftsperson’s journey behind it, allowing our customers to feel a deeper connection not just to the instrument but to the rich tapestry of Irish music culture.
For musicians looking to stand out in a crowded industry, a similar approach can be invaluable. It’s crucial to find and articulate your unique voice or style that sets you apart from others. This could be a fusion of genres, a distinctive way of storytelling through music, or even a unique performance style. Social media and digital platforms offer powerful tools for storytelling, allowing you to share your journey, your inspirations, and the nuances behind your music, creating a stronger bond with your audience. Additionally, collaborating with other artists can introduce you to their audiences, while also producing unique sounds that can’t be found elsewhere. In essence, differentiation comes from not just the music you create, but the stories you tell and the connections you forge.
Looking ahead, what do you envision for the future of McNeela Music, and what insights can musicians take from your journey as they plan their own career trajectories?
Looking forward, I envision McNeela Music continuing to deepen its roots in the tradition of Irish music while embracing the possibilities that new technologies and global connectivity offer. Our goal is to not only preserve the rich heritage of Irish music but to make it accessible and relevant to new generations across the globe. This includes innovating in the way instruments are crafted and learned, expanding our online presence to connect with a wider community, and continuing to support musicians at every stage of their journey.
For musicians planning their career trajectories, our journey offers a few key insights. First, grounding yourself in tradition or your unique musical identity provides a solid foundation, but openness to innovation and new technologies can propel your career to new heights. The balance between tradition and innovation is delicate but crucial. Second, the importance of community cannot be overstated. Building and nurturing connections with fellow musicians, fans, and industry professionals can provide support, inspiration, and opportunities. Lastly, resilience and adaptability are essential qualities. The path of a musician, much like that of an entrepreneur, is filled with challenges and competition. Staying true to your vision while being adaptable to change can guide you through uncertain times.
In essence, the future is bright for those who respect their roots while eagerly exploring new horizons. Whether you’re crafting instruments or crafting music, the principles of passion, innovation, community, and resilience are universal guides to success.
